Nottingham, Wayne B. (Wayne Buckles), 1899-
Wayne B. Nottingham papers, 1923-1964.
The collection consists largely of laboratory notes for the study of electron physics, thermionic emissions, gas discharges, photoelectric effects, field emissions, and the Nottingham gauge. The gauge was a modified Baynard-Alpert ionization gauge. Also included are notes, problem sets, quizzes, and exams for courses Nottingham taught at MIT, including Physics-Mechanics and Heat (8.02), Physical Electronics (8.21), Physical Electronics Lab (8.201), Electronics Lab (8.202), and Experimental Electronics (8.212). Copies of some of his publications are also included.
Wayne Buckles Nottingham, 1899-1964, B.S. 1920, E.E. 1929, Purdue University; A.M. 1926, Ph.D. 1929, Princeton University, completed his thesis on metallic arcs under Karl Compton, and joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as assistant professor of physics in 1931. He was appointed associate professor in 1936, and professor in 1942. In 1935 he organized and conducted the first MIT Conference on Physical Electronics, which provided a forum for the exchange of information in this field. Nottingham contributed many papers and articles to symposia and journals in his field and developed a number of electronic measuring devices. During World War II, he served as a special representative of the MIT Radiation Laboratory to the Office of Scientific Research and Development in Washington, D.C. His research focused on physical electronics and thermionics.
