Evans, Ulick R. (Ulick Richardson), 1889-1980.
Ulick R. Evans papers, 1908-1981.
The surviving papers, most unfortunately, contain little early research material, Evans having firmly cleared out most of his papers in 1964. There is, however, a little correspondence from his earliest years (1912, when he set up a consultancy with Samuel and E. K. [later Sir Eric] Rideal) and last research for his supplement to his major work "Corrosion and oxidation of metals." There is also material of some biographical interest relating to his athletic activities, Cambridge life, interest in environmental conservation, and in nutrition and food science.
Evans, internationally known as the 'Father of the modern science of corrosion and protection of metals,' spent virtually his whole life in Cambridge. He was educated at Marlborough College (1902-1907, King's College, Cambridge (1907-1911). He began his research on electrochemistry at Wiesbaden and London. He served in the army from August 1914 until 1919. He then began his work at Cambridge.
