Einstein, Albert, 1879-1955.
Albert Einstein papers, 1712, 1859-present (bulk 1901-1955).
The collection includes several thousand items of correspondence with scientists (originals, copies, clippings from the published literature), from such figures as Niels Bohr, Erwin Schrd̲inger, Willem de Sitter, David Hilbert, Moritz Schlick, and Max von Laue, as well as more obscure or controversial people. By far, most of these are unpublished. There are also many files of Einstein lecture notes, manuscripts (some unpublished,) and pads of his calculations. In addition, there is a huge correspondence involving many of the major figures of the twentieth century on subjects such as literature, music, politics, pacifism, arms control, philosophy, Zionism, the founding of Hebrew University, human rights, etc. There are files with such names as the Mahatma Ghandi, Joseph Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Paul Valřy, Bertrand Russell, Chaim Weizmann, and the Queen of the Belgians; notes on Benedictus de Spinoza and David Hume; Einstein's personal diaries of travels abroad; and even his light-hearted verses. In short, the collection is a kaleidoscope of a scientist's mind and influence, as well as of the interactions of the science, politics and culture of the twentieth century.
