European Southern Observatory records, circa 1953-1974.
Includes papers of three astronomers, J. H. Oort, J. H. Bannier, and Adriaan Blaauw, received from outside European Southern Observatory (ESO), but pertaining to the establishment and management of the observatory. J. H. Oort was one of the twelve European astronomers to sign a statement at the Groningen conference in 1954 recommending the establishment of a joint observatory for the study of the southern hemisphere. Bannier was director of the Dutch National Science Foundation (ZWO) and President of the Council of CERN, these papers pertain to his membership in the provisional council of the ESO. The Blaauw papers pertain to the Secretariat of the ESO Committee (which preceded the ESO Council), at the ESO Working Group for Buildings (1963-1965); other documents before 1968, documents pertaining to the ESO Scientific Directorship (1968-1969), and documents pertaining to the ESO General Directorship (1970-1974). Also includes a file from within the ESO marked "ESO Allgemein" (1961-1964).
