Fonds consists of correspondence; subject files; daily journals; speeches; and scientific papers. The fonds also contains a photographic portrait of Dr. E.W.R. Steacie, circa 1960.
Edgar William Richard Steacie, physical chemist and public servant, born in 1900 at Westmount, Que., received his education from the Royal Military College and McGill University, B.sc. 1923, M.sc. 1924, Ph.D. 1926. Dr. Steacie remained at McGill as a member of the chemistry department until 1939, when he left to join the National Research Council in 1952 and remained in that position until his death. He was the author or co-author of three books and over two hundred articles. In recognition of his contribution to chemistry, particularly in the areas of photochemistry and free radical reactions, and of his role in promoting scientific research in Canada, Dr. Steacie was awarded more than fifteen honorary degrees. In addition, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, a Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A., and a Foreign Member of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. At the time of his death, Dr. Steacie was the President of the International Council of Scientific Unions.
