The Canadian Association of Physicists was formed in 1946, adopted its present name in 1947 and was incorporated in 1951. The Association is not a professional licensing body but exists to further the advancement of the science of physics; to promote the use of physical discoveries in the interests of humankind; to promote and disseminate knowledge in the physical sciences throughout Canada; and to advance mutual understanding and cooperation between physicists, universities, research organizations and industry. The association publishes Physics in Canada, and sponsors a lectureship series. In addition it awards the Herzberg Medal for outstanding achievement in any field of research by a physicist; the L.G. Elliot prize for the best honours physics or engineering physics student; and the CAP High School prizes.
