United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. Northern Groups.
Atomic Energy Authority Northern Groups records, 1946-1955.
Reports from the Atomic Energy Production Division established as part of the Atomic Energy Division of the Ministry of Supply in 1946. Its task was to produce fissile material. A plant to produce uranium metal fuel rods was established at Springfield; atomic piles were built at Windscale, along with a chemical separation plant to make plutonium into a metal; and a gaseous diffusion plant was set up at Capenhurst to separate pure uranium 235. The division later also became responsible for the reactor at Calder Hall and the fast reactor at Dounreay. The headquarters of the division was established at Risley. The reports cover the work of all these plants and also the reports of the Chemical inspectorate of the Ministry of Supply, which was responsible for analytical work in the factories.
