Collections relating to the history of computing.
Collections include personal papers of computer pioneers, such as D. G. Prinz, one of the Ferranti computer team members in the 1950s; computer manuals for pre-1965 machines; and some major collections of records, including the records of Manchester University Computer Science Department, which includes correspondence and reports of F. C. Williams, M. H. A. Newman, and Alan Turing, among others. Also in the Computer Science Department collection are records from the National Research Development Corporation, a body which became tied to the fate of the British computer industry by holding and defending patents, placing contracts and sponsoring projects, and was also involved with leading firms in the British computer industry. The Archive also holds the historical section of the library of the British Computer Society, a largely secondary collection of pamphlets, reprints, reports and manuals.
