IEE photographs, prints and drawings collection.
Photographs, prints, drawings and slides, mainly consisting of portraits of eminent 19th and 20th century scientists, electrical engineers, and IEE members. The portraits consist of prints and original photographs, photographic copies of portraits in other media and slides of people such as von Guericke, Faraday, Ronalds, Appleton, Hertha Ayrton (the first woman member of the IEE, elected in 1899) and all Presidents of the Institution. There is also much material illustrating the laying of submarine and other cables from 1865 onwards, including several albums; for example an album of photographs of cable laying across Lake Constance in 1906 and another showing cable laying in Holland by Callenders in 1922. One magnificent album of photographs illustrates the 1881 Paris electrical exhibition. Another shows the stages of the construction of Ferranti's Deptford Power Station, 1888-1892, with photographs of its dismantling in 1933. There are several albums of factory interiors, production lines, products and staff, including one of photographs of the A. H. Hunt capacitor factory during World War II showing equipment, research facilities, production methods and staff training for air raid evacuation. Institution events are recorded, starting with a summer visit to Switzerland in 1899 and including an album of photographs of the centenary celebrations in 1971.
