High Energy Physics Laboratory Colliding Beam Experiment records (CBX), 1958-1981.
Experiment proposals and logbooks (1963-1967) for the 500 MEV colliding ring at the High Energy Physics Laboratory, CBX counter and data notebooks (1966-1968), and the "Report of the HEPAP Subpanel on Colliding Beams, 1966." Files maintained by Burton Richter, head of the CBX collaboration.
With an unprecedented grant of $800,000, work began in 1958 on the Stanford-Princeton colliding beam experiment (CBX). Gerard O'Neil of Princeton and Burton Richter of Stanford led in the design. Preliminary results from electron-electron scattering was first seen in 1963 after the collaboration spent years working through technological innovations to get this first-generation storage ring to work. Experiments continued to run until 1968 although by its final years many of the Stanford physicist focussed their attention on the second generation of colliding beam technology, the proposed Stanford Positron-Electron Accelerator Ring (SPEAR) to be connected to the new two-mile linear accelerator at SLAC.
