Educated in Dundee and Edinburgh University and then entered the office of James Balfour. He went to Australia in 1855 but then joined the staff of Kew Observatory as assistant observer in 1856. He was director of Kew Observatory 1859-1871. F. R. S. 1862. Rumford Medal 1868. Professor of natural philosophy at Owen's College Manchester 1870-1887.
