Chemist, who worked in various fields of chemistry; Fellow of the Royal Society; Reader in Chemistry, Oxford, 1924, and Professor of Chemistry, 1936 until his death. Known especially for his work in physical organic chemistry, and for his infludential book on valency (1927).
