Stokes, 1836-1858, on physics and optics, including vibrations of light; 16 letters, some of them long and illustrated, from Charles Piazzi Smyth, 1855, mainly on instrumentation in astronomy, navigation, and physics (including gyroscopic mountings); also 3 letters from Powell to an amateur astronomer.
Physicist and mathematician; Fellow in the Royal Society; Savilian Professor of Geometry, Oxford, from 1827 until his death. His special interest was the physics of optics and light.
