Experimental scientist. Born 12th June 1851, Penkhull, Staffordshire, gained exhibition to Royal College of Science, graduated D. Sc. 1877, appointed professor of physics, University College Liverpool, 1881, Fellow of the Royal Society, 1887, Principal of Birmingham University, 1900, knighted, 1902, died 22 August 1940.
