Caryotakis, George
Oral history interview with George Caryotakis, 2020 May 27.
In this interview, George Caryotakis, former head of the Klystron/Microwave Department at SLAC, discusses his life and career. Caryotakis recounts his childhood in Greece, and he explains the circumstances of his emigration to the United States in 1948. He explains how he was accepted to Stanford for graduate school on the recommendation of Otway Pardee, his physics professor at Syracuse University. He describes his graduate research in amplifier interstage synthesis, working under the direction of Marvin Chodorow. Caryotakis discusses his postdoctoral work at Varian Associates, which was doing cutting edge research in klystrons and traveling wave tubes in the 1950s. Caryotakis discusses his subsequent work at Eimac, where he developed a 10-kilowatt S- and X-band tube, and he describes his foray into business management at Thermo Electron. He describes his hire at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), where Greg Loew and Burt Richter sought his expertise in high power klystrons. Caryotakis explains the centrality of klystrons to the operation of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC) accelerator, and he recounts his contributions to the Next Linear Collider and B Factory projects. At the end of the interview, Caryotakis discusses his retirement and his involvement in technological pursuits in recent years.
