American Institute of Physics. Center for History of Physics
AIP Center for History of Physics letters to Spencer Weart, 1975-1978.
The letter from Stephen Brush (1978) describes work of Shou Chin Wang, concentrating upon his interaction with Peter Debye and the paper published in Physikalische Zeitschrift in 1927. The letter from Otto Frisch (1975) is autobiographical in nature. Stanislaw Mrozowski (1976) explains his work with W. Opechowski on neutron separation during fission, also the 1939 rejection of their article on the subject by NATURE. The letter from Richard B. Roberts (1976). describes early work on neutron emission.
The Center for History and Philosophy of Physics was established as a division of the American Institute of Physics in 1965 by the joining of the AIP's Project on the History of Recent Physics in the United States, which was started in 1961, and the Niels Bohr Library for History of Physics, which had opened in 1962. Its purpose is to aid in the efforts of scientists, historians, and archivists to document, investigate, and understand the nature and origin of developments in 20th century physics and their impact on society. In 1972 the name was changed to the Center for History of Physics.
