The Universities Research Association (URA), a consortium of leading research oriented universities, formed in 1965 to create and manage the National Accelerator Laboratory. URA managed Fermilab from 1967 to 2006 as a contractor to the United States Department of Energy (DOE). In 2006, URA and the University of Chicago formed the Fermi Research Alliance (FRA). FRA now manages Fermilab for DOE.
