U. S. Atomic Energy Commission Office of Public and Technical Information records, 1946-1952.
Press releases, press digests, and speeches. The press releases and speeches given by Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) officially document AEC policy on a variety of issues: nuclear waste disposal, radiation-related health hazards, medical applications of nuclear technology, AEC project development, development of industrial peacetime applications of nuclear energy, and the economic ramifications of nuclear research. The press digests, developed for internal AEC dissemination, document international press reaction to the above issues, as well as to the United States nuclear weapons policy, the worldwide proliferation of fissionable materials, security concerns in U.S.-Soviet weapons, development, and the potential results of nuclear war.
The United States Atomic Energy Commission was established in 1946 to put atomic energy research and development under civilian control. It took over most of the personnel from the Manhattan Engineer District when it was dissolved in 1949. The commission was abolished in 1974 and its functions transferred to the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Federal Energy Administration, and the Federal Power Commission.
