The International Union of Crystallography (IUC) was established in 1947. The International Congresses of Cystallography are held every three years together with the meetings of the General Assembly, the governing body of the IUC. The first congress was held in Cambridge, Mass. in 1948; the eighth (1969) was held at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The Steering Committee for the 1969 Congress was made up of members of the United States of America National Committee for Crystallography, a division of the IUC.
