History of Physics [sound recording], 2014 April 5.
Audio recording of session B10 of the April 2014 annual meeting of the American Physical Society, held in Savannah, Georgia in April 2014. This session was chaired by Catherine Westfall, Michigan State University. Talks (and speakers) include: "Reactions to Einstein's 1929 Unified Field Theory Proposal" (Paul Halpern); "The Origins of the Franck-Hertz Experiments" (Clayton Gearhart); "Nikola Tesla, the Ether and his Telautomaton" (Kendall Milar); "Minkowski's Road to Space-Time, and its Consequences and an Alternative" (Felix T. Smith); "Rapidity: The Special Relativity Work of Dr. Vladimir Karapetoff (Hamilton Carter); "Developments in Computational Physics at Particle Accelerators (Francisco Cano); "From the Dawn of Nuclear Physics to the First Atomic Bombs (Stephen Woolbright, Jacob Schumacher, Ekaterina Michonova-Alexova). Topics discussed include Albert Einstein, unified gravitation, James Franck, Gustav Hertz, Ernest Rutherford, Nikola Tesla, ether, Maxwell's equation, Hermann Minkowski, Vladimir Karapetoff, special relativity, computational physics, particle accelerators, nuclear physics, atomic bombs, Manhattan Project.
This professional society of educators, industrial and government research workers, and students of physics and related fields, was established in 1899 to promote the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics. It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The American Physical Society (APS) meetings are a forum for scientists to gather and share research results on a wide range of physics and physics-related topics.
