Schmidt, Fred Henry, 1915-

Physicist, professor and author. In 1946 he was apppointed to the faculty of the Physics Department at the University of Washington where he taught and also worked in the Nuclear Physics Lab until his death. With David Bodansky, he co-authored the book, The energy controversy: the fight over nuclear power, published in 1976. Schmidt completed his undergraduate education in Engineering Physics at the University of Michigan and his Masters at the University of Buffalo in 1940. As a graduate student at the University of California-Berkeley, he worked on both the 37 and 60 inch cyclotrons. From 1941-1945, he worked on the Manhattan Atomic Bomb Project. In 1945 he returned to Berekeley where he earned his Ph.D. in the same year.
