Files of group leader Burton Richter regarding storage-ring development, the construction of SPEAR, and the SP-17 collabo- ration. Included are the proposals to the Atomic Energy Commission for construction of a storage ring facility (1964, 1965, 1966 and 1967); notes, papers, talks, memos relating to SP-17 proposal; subject files regarding storage-ring development, and construction of SPEAR; SPEAR Reports, correspondence and memoranda (1962-1965) regarding outside user policies; long-range planning; SPEAR publicity (1973-1975) and budgets (1971-1974). Also included are files on the Mark II detector (1972-1979), on various experiments (such as the Quark, Spark Chamber and Polarized Photon experiments) and on the SPEAR computer (1969-1977). A later accession includes miscellaneous correspondence 1974-1976; psi discovery and Nobel Prize lecture and publicity files.
During the 1960s and early 1970s, Group C developed colliding beam technology and the Mark I detector in support of a number of experiments that found great success at the Stanford Positron Electron Accelerator Ring (SPEAR) facility. SLAC experiment SP-17, a Group C/Lawrence Berkeley Lab collaboration, discovered the psi in November 1974, leading to initial confirmation of the standard model.
