John Overend, 1928-1984, physical chemist. Born in Keighly, England, he earned his B.A. (1952) and his Ph.D. (1955) from St. John's College, Oxford. He completed a post-doctorate fellowship in infrared spectroscopy at the University of Minnesota (1955-1958). He became an assistant professor of physical chemistry at the University in 1960; full professor in 1967. He was considered an expert in molecular spectroscopy.
