G. Polvani was the director of the Institute of Physics of the Milano University from 1930 to 1960. Afterwards he was president of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) and president of the Societ ̉Italiana di Fisica (SIF) and director of Nuovo Cimento (NC).
