Civil engineer and theoretical physicist. Attended Edinburgh University for two years beginning in 1836. Awarded the Gold Medal for his essay on "The Undulatory Theory of Light" and gained an extra prize in his second year for his essay on "Methods of Physical Investigation". Changed careers in 1848 from civil engineer to theoretical physicist, conducting research for five yearsthat gained him a Royal Society Fellowship.
