The Institute for Applied Geophysics AS USSR (IAG) as founded on the base of the abolished Geophysical Institute AS USSR and since October 1963 passed under supervision of the Central Administrative Board of the Meteorological Service of the Soviet of Ministers of the USSR. Its predecessors were the Geophysical Joint Expedition of the Institute for the Theoretical Geophysics (March-December 1946), Geophysical Joint Expedition of the Geophysical Institute (January 1947-November 1954) led by G. A. Gamburzev, the Department for Applied Geophysics of the Geophysical Institute (December 1954-December 1955) led by E. K. Phiodorov. The director was E. K. Phiodorov (1956-1969).
