American Astronomical Society. Historical Astronomy Division.
American Astronomical Society Historical Astronomy Division addition to records, 1898-1998 (bulk 1996-1998).
This collection contains correspondence, essay manuscripts, oral history transcripts, and photographs relating to the publication of the book "The American Astronomical Societys First Century." This book, edited by David H. DeVorkin, was published by the AIP Press in 1998 and it contains information regarding the American Astronomical Society (AAS) chapter and national meetings, prominent astronomers, and the emergence of new technologies and concepts. The bulk of the documentation illustrates the production and development phases that DeVorkin went through to prepare the anthology. The individual authors would compile data, photographs, and texts to prepare their chapters, and subsequently send the materials to DeVorkin. Therefore, a great deal of correspondence (both electronic mail and written) between the parties exists. Correspondence between DeVorkin and the AIP Press exists as well, covering topics such as layout, copy editing, copyright permissions, etc.
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) was founded in 1899 as the Astronomical and Astrophysical Society of America. The name changed in 1914. Its purpose is the advancement of astronomy and closely related branches of science. The Society became an Associate Member of the American Institute of Physics in 1958 and has been a full Member Society since 1966. It is also affiliated with the International Astronomical Union. The Historical Astronomy Division of AAS was founded in 1980 to "advance interest in topics related to the historical nature of astronomy," which includes history of astronomy, archaeoastronomy, and the application of historical records to modern astrophysical problems.
