Papers include correspondence, subject files, reprints of scholarly publications, and teaching and biographical materials which span the years 1945-1991 and document Hannes Alfven's career as a research physicist and faculty member of UCSD's engineering school. Significant correspondents include Syun Ichi Akasofu, Victor C. Anderson, Halton Arp, Per Carlqvist, Gunnar Johanson, Zdenek Kopal, Bo Lehnert, Linus Pauling, Anthony L. Peratt, Harold Urey, and Herbert York.
Astrophysicist who contributed significantly to advances in fields of magnetohydrodynamics, plasma physics, geophysics, thermonuclear reaction, and cosmology. Alfven shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics with Louis Neel. His teaching posts included the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, San Diego and the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. He was also an advocate of nuclear armaments destruction, working actively with other scientists such as Harold Urey to prevent nuclear proliferation and conflict. He died 1995.
