The Succession of individuals to hold the position was Robert Cutler, Dillon Anderson, William Jackson, Robert Cutler for a second incumbency, and finally Gordon Gray. The Special Assistant served as liaison between the President and the National Security Council staff who focused upon long-term national security policy.
