The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center was formally approved for construction in 1962, and it began research in 1966. Although a part of Stanford University, it is distinct from the physics department there. Many faculty have worked in both locations. In 2008, the U. S. Department of Energy renamed the facility the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, wherein "SLAC" has no explicit meaning.
