The Committee on Applications of Physics (CAP) was formed by the American Physical Society (APS) in 1974. One of the committee’s primary functions was to advise APS on matters related to industry and applied physics. To this end, CAP established the Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics, which later subsumed many of CAP's core functions. In 1998, the Committee on Applications of Physics changed its name to “Committee on Careers and Professional Development.” The new mandate for this committee involved career and professional development in physics.
