The massive People's Climate March — the organizers claimed nearly 400,000 participants — walked peacefully through New York City on September 21, 2014, anticipating a one-day United Nations climate summit. Associated demonstrations were held in 166 countries. Posters called for wind turbines and solar power, an end to the US-Canadian Keystone XL oil-pipeline project, reduction of deforestation and meat-eating, and related causes. Among the marchers were the U.N. Secretary General, the city’s mayor, famous actors, and other celebrities.
