The National Center for Atmospheric Research labs in Boulder, Colorado, designed by the great architect I.M. Pei. (Their 2010 supercomputer is pictured here.) Among much other work, NCAR's Community Climate Model is widely used by other institutions. NCAR exemplifies the high level of excellence and value to society that the US Government – in this case, through partnership with a consortium of universities – can sometimes achieve. In 2024 the Trump administration announced plans to break up NCAR; the plan is under litigation.
